About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Laser Research Scientist to join our team at Lockheed Martin. As a key member of our research and development team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing advanced gas and solid-state laser systems and devices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop high-power laser systems and devices, including laser resonators, amplifiers, and parametric frequency converters.
  • Conduct trade studies and make selections of laser and/or optical technologies to meet project requirements.
  • Maintain currency with scientific state-of-the-art to support innovation and design enhancements relevant to Lockheed Martin's focus laser technologies.
  • Design and model gas laser physics and control electronics, diffractive beam propagation, thermo-optic effects, laser pump sources and schema, and parametric processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate laser systems and devices into larger systems and platforms.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and technical reports.
  • Present research and development results to internal and external stakeholders, including technical reports, presentations, and publications.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math, or related fields.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in laser research and development, with a focus on gas and solid-state lasers.
  • Strong background in laser physics, optics, and materials science.
  • Experience with laser design and modeling software tools, such as Zemax, FRED, GLAD, Code-V, and LASCAD.
  • Knowledge of laser engineering, including laser resonators, amplifiers, and parametric frequency converters.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with laboratory development and modeling software tools, such as Matlab/Simulink, Labview, and Mathcad.
  • Knowledge of laser weapons technologies, including radiometry, optical propagation and adaptive optics, beam control, and/or target effects.
  • Expertise in aspects of laser modeling theory, custom modeling of laser gain dynamics, thermal effects resulting from these gain dynamics, loss mechanisms and efficiency drivers for gas lasers, diffraction analysis of laser resonators and optical beam trains, and various other optical processes.
  • Field-related contacts/network.
  • Experience with both product development and technology development organizations.
  • Knowledge of DoD/DoE/FFRDC research & development ecosystem.
  • Technical leadership of laser and/or NLO hardware transition to high TRL (for terrestrial, airborne, and/or space applications).
  • Experience in federally or institutionally-funded project and program management techniques.
  • Current TS/SCI clearance or equivalent qualifying investigation.
