POSITION OVERVIEW

The Illinois Refining Division of Marathon Petroleum is in search of proficient and committed Crane Operators to enhance our energetic workforce. This role entails significant accountability for the secure operation and routine upkeep of various cranes and heavy machinery. The ideal candidate will exhibit the capability to handle intricate tasks independently and accurately within a fast-paced environment.

PRIMARY DUTIES
  • Operate a variety of cranes and heavy machinery, including backhoes, forklifts, and truck-mounted units, ensuring top-notch performance and safety standards.
  • Input and manage data in our digital systems to monitor equipment usage and maintenance timelines.
  • Collaborate with various departments, including maintenance, environmental, and operations, to support scheduled tasks and maintain compliance with standards.
  • Perform comprehensive inspections of equipment to uphold safety and operational efficiency.
  • Develop, evaluate, and revise operational protocols, including Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Maintenance Action Plans (MAPs), Best Management Practices (BMPs), and Safety Procedures (SPs).
  • Keep qualifications, certifications, and training related to crane operation and safety current.
  • Stay updated on Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Assist during Turnarounds and Project executions, contributing to the operational effectiveness of the refinery.
  • Actively participate in safety meetings at the beginning of each shift and engage in thorough field safety audits.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of industry codes, standards, and specifications relevant to crane and mobile equipment operation.
  • Work alongside contractors and third-party vendors to coordinate and execute tasks efficiently.
  • Oversee the permitting process for lifting and hoisting operations in line with SP-13 guidelines, including participation in What-if drills and pre-lift meetings.
  • Ensure the precise completion and closure of work orders, providing daily updates on workforce activities, successes, and challenges to supervisory personnel.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) Qualification, or NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) for operating large and small hydraulic cranes.
  • A valid Driver's License.
  • Willingness to work a Monday-Thursday 10-hour shift schedule, with routine on-call support and off-hour responsibilities as necessary.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Over five years of experience in crane operations.
  • Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (CDL will be required within the first year of employment).
  • Experience operating cranes with capacities up to 160 tons.
  • Exhibits punctuality, teamwork, and self-motivation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work involves activities at ground level and at heights on various surfaces, including concrete, metal grating, gravel, and asphalt, while climbing over 75 feet, lifting weights of 40 pounds or more, carrying 10-20 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 250 pounds with mechanical assistance. This role may require working in confined spaces and wearing appropriate safety gear, including a self-contained breathing apparatus when necessary, utilizing hand tools, and performing tasks both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This position is part of a structured progression of job titles and pay rates.

Starting pay rate is between $42.90, with a current top rate of $50.70.
