Job Summary
The Physician Assistant is a valued member of the General Surgical team at Steward Health Care, working alongside skilled surgeons, other Physician Assistants, and Surgical Residents.
In this role, the PA will work under the guidance and supervision of a physician, providing top-notch, cost-effective patient care through various surgical preparation, peri-operative, post-operative procedures, and medical management tasks. Additionally, the PA will assist in carrying out surgical and other essential procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough history-taking and physical examinations to assess patient conditions.
- Review patient records meticulously and order relevant laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic studies based on the patient's condition.
- Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds to discuss patient care and progress.
- Maintain accurate progress notes and provide pre-operative education to patients and families.
- Coordinate hospital admissions and discharges under the physician's direction.
- Perform or assist in various procedures, including:
- Incision and drainage of wounds
- Post-pyloric feeding tube placement
- Central line placement (internal jugular, subclavian, and femoral vein cannulation)
- Dialysis catheter placement
- Phlebotomy
- Arterial puncture
- Foley catheter insertion
- Radial artery cannulation
- Emergent decompression of tension pneumothorax, including thoracostomy catheter insertion
Requirements
- Current BLS and ACLS certification
- Massachusetts license to practice as a Physician Assistant
- DEA / Massachusetts Control Substance Licensure
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program. Preference given to candidates with at least one year of experience in a surgical program.
