Job Summary

This is a technical and specialized field position in community risk reduction. Work involves commercial building inspections that focus on compliance with local and State fire safety codes, laws, and ordinances. Proper documentation and record keeping are required for all visits and inspections conducted. Work is performed under general supervision, according to established guidelines, and is reviewed by an Assistant Fire Chief.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of buildings and property to check for life safety hazards, efficiency of fire protection equipment, adequate means of egress, and general compliance with all fire and life safety codes.
  • Inspect and test installation of fire protection and alarm systems for code compliance with approved plans.
  • Investigate complaints received by fire crews or citizens related to fire code compliance.
  • Enter inspection results into a database to complete inspection reports.
  • Issue fire code violations, consult and advise contractors, property, and business owners regarding corrective action necessary.
  • Assist facilities with required fire drills.
  • Represent the City in the community and public events as directed.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) and six (6) months to one (1) year experience in fire inspection, fire prevention or related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Some college coursework or degree preferred.
  • Possession of State of Florida Municipal Fire Safety Inspector's Certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The work requires frequent driving and possession of a valid Florida Driver's License. The essential functions of the job require sitting approximately two (2) hours per day, standing approximately one (1) hour per day, and walking approximately five (5) hours per day. The work requires frequent bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 15 pounds; lifting/carrying objects weighing 15 to 44 pounds, and lifting/carrying objects weighing 45 pounds and over.
