Rail Operations Supervisor

About the Role:

This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the movement and placement of rail cars in a rail yard. As a key member of the Marmon Holdings, Inc. team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our rail operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate switch crews to ensure the completion of tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws, including training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, and providing performance input.
  • Operate electric, diesel-electric, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives, and interpret train orders, signals, and rules and regulations.
  • Transport freight, switch, and place rail cars in a timely and correct manner.
  • Communicate frequently with the yard coordinator to report progress and coordinate movements with plant facility personnel.
  • Train new employees on procedures and policies, and plan and direct the movement of rail cars.
  • Coordinate movements with plant facility personnel to provide required service, and interpret railroad signals, rules, and regulations.
  • Observe track to detect obstructions or defects, and prepare reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
  • Lubricate moving parts of locomotives, and handle railroad equipment in a safe manner using manually operated brakes.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma (or equivalent) highly preferred but not required.
  • 1+ years supervisory experience preferred.
  • Military experience helpful.
  • Must be extremely dependable and punctual in attendance, and have reliable transportation to work every day.
  • Good communication skills, and ability to assess multiple tasks and develop a plan to complete them in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work well with others as part of a team.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business information, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently required to stand and walk.
  • Occasionally required to sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear, and taste or smell.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

  • Regularly works in an outdoor environment, in various weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
