Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Specialist Senior to support our research efforts in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia. The successful candidate will assist our faculty researchers in designing and implementing research projects, developing methods and procedures, and preparing research proposals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist faculty researchers in designing and implementing research projects, developing methods and procedures, and preparing research proposals.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of projects, including supervising research activities and support personnel.
  • Formulate and implement short- and long-range goals for the operation of the lab, projecting future needs and formulating strategies consistent with projections.
  • Develop and implement lab policies and procedures, managing and coordinating operational policies and procedures.
  • Act as liaison to other departments, divisions, or organizations, developing and maintaining relationships to support research efforts.
  • Develop, design, and conduct small or moderately complex research projects or experiments, coordinating data collection and screening, and verifying data.
  • Develop protocols and criteria, determine interview procedures, and approve protocols.
  • Conduct analyses of data and interpret and implement research methodology based on outcomes of analyses.
  • Co-author publications and present results with the Principal Investigator at meetings or conferences.
  • Provide guidance on hiring and training for technical personnel, supervising, training, and instructing residents, interns, students, or other staff in lab techniques and procedures.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.
  • None.
Working Conditions

This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals, as well as keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
