General Overview

The role involves assessing market dynamics, formulating and conveying strategies aimed at minimizing Net Power Costs. This includes negotiating the buying and selling of wholesale energy, transmission, and financial instruments, in alignment with the Company's strategic objectives. The position also entails managing bids and overseeing performance for resources engaged in the Energy Imbalance Market or other formal independent system operators or regional transmission organizations.

Key Responsibilities

For the Associate Energy Transaction Trader, the responsibilities include:

  • Executing energy sales or purchases to balance system load and resource needs while reducing Net Power Costs.
  • Collaborating with Energy Supply Management teams to devise strategies that optimize generation assets, including thermal, hydro, and wind resources.
  • Overseeing bid submissions for resources involved in the Energy Imbalance Market or other formal independent system operators or regional transmission organizations.
  • Monitoring the dispatch of the Company's generation assets on an hourly basis, utilizing limited and renewable resources to lower Net Power Costs.
  • Managing data interactions with the Energy Imbalance Market or other formal independent system operators or regional transmission organizations.

For the Mid-Level Energy Transaction Trader, additional responsibilities include:

  • Conducting post-operational analyses to enhance performance.
  • Interpreting and validating moderately complex model outputs.
  • Providing guidance to associate-level traders.

For the Senior Energy Transaction Trader, further responsibilities include:

  • Acting as a subject matter expert, evaluating essential tools' performance, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating on enhancements.
  • Offering direction to associate and career-level traders, as well as authoring and maintaining business unit operating procedures.
  • Formulating short-term trading strategies to optimize the Company's portfolio of generating assets and increase corporate margins.
Qualifications

For the Associate Energy Transaction Trader, the qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Capability to analyze market conditions and identify opportunities and strategies to minimize Net Power Costs, effectively communicating with Energy Supply Management personnel.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to achieve results within time constraints.
  • Proficiency in providing clear documentation for root cause analysis.
  • Ability to identify, negotiate, and finalize sales and purchase opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using personal computers and tools necessary for essential duties.
  • Understanding of financial modeling, risk assessment, commodity management, and electricity and natural gas trading practices.
  • Non-standard work hours may be required.

For the Mid-Level Energy Transaction Trader, additional qualifications include:

  • A minimum of two to three years of experience in trading or one year in electric utility operations with applicable NERC certification.
  • Mastery of concepts impacting job performance for coaching Associate Transaction Traders.

For the Senior Energy Transaction Trader, further qualifications include:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in energy trading.
  • Analytical skills to comprehend market conditions and identify sales/purchase opportunities.
  • Ability to maintain, configure, and develop tools and displays utilized in the PacifiCorp trading and scheduling desks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in energy trading, scheduling, or utility resource management.
  • Advanced analytical skills to understand market conditions and identify sales/purchase opportunities.
  • Advanced degree or certification.
  • Proficiency in database management.
  • Proficiency in Visual Basic.
  • Advanced knowledge of non-standard over-the-counter options and financial products.
  • Experience in organized ISO/RTO/EIM markets.
  • Experience in pricing Congestion Revenue Rights.
