Position Overview

The Energy Transaction Trader is responsible for analyzing market dynamics and formulating strategies aimed at minimizing Net Power Costs. This includes negotiating the sale and purchase of wholesale energy, transmission, and financial instruments, aligning with the company's strategic objectives. The role involves managing bids and overseeing performance for resources engaged in the Energy Imbalance Market or other independent system operators.

Key Responsibilities

For Associate Energy Transaction Trader:

  • Facilitate the buying and selling of energy to align with system load and resource needs while reducing Net Power Costs.
  • Collaborate with Energy Supply Management to devise strategies that optimize generation assets, including thermal, hydro, and wind resources.
  • Oversee bid submissions for resources involved in the Energy Imbalance Market or similar organizations.
  • Continuously monitor the dispatch of generating assets, ensuring efficient use of limited and renewable resources.
  • Manage data interactions with the Energy Imbalance Market or other relevant operators.

For Mid-Level Energy Transaction Trader:

  • Conduct post-operational analyses to enhance performance.
  • Interpret and validate moderately complex model outputs.
  • Guide associate-level traders in their responsibilities.

For Senior Energy Transaction Trader:

  • Act as a subject matter expert, evaluating essential tools and addressing performance issues.
  • Provide leadership to both associate and career-level traders, developing and maintaining operational procedures.
  • Create short-term trading strategies to optimize the corporate portfolio of generating assets.
Qualifications

For Associate Energy Transaction Trader:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to analyze market conditions and identify strategies to lower Net Power Costs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to deliver results under time constraints.
  • Effective communication skills for collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using computers and relevant tools for job functions.
  • Understanding of financial modeling, risk assessment, and trading practices in electricity and natural gas.
  • Willingness to work non-standard hours.

For Mid-Level Energy Transaction Trader:

  • Two to three years of trading experience or one year in electric utility operations with applicable NERC certification.
  • Mastery of concepts affecting job performance for coaching purposes.

For Senior Energy Transaction Trader:

  • Five years of experience in energy trading.
  • Analytical skills to assess market conditions and identify trading opportunities.
  • Ability to maintain and develop tools used in trading and scheduling operations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in energy trading, scheduling, or utility resource management.
  • Advanced degree or relevant certification.
  • Proficiency in database management and Visual Basic.
  • Knowledge of non-standard over-the-counter options and financial products.
  • Experience in organized ISO/RTO/EIM markets.
  • Experience with pricing Congestion Revenue Rights.
