Elevator Installation and Maintenance Technician

The Elevator Installation and Maintenance Technician is primarily tasked with the assembly, installation, repair, and routine upkeep of various types of elevators, including traction elevators, freight elevators, chairlifts, and dumbwaiters. Once the equipment is operational, the technician is responsible for its maintenance, repair, and modernization.

Key Responsibilities:

Installation and Maintenance Duties:

  • Interpret blueprints to establish the layout of system components, frameworks, and other essential elements.
  • Assemble and install both traction and hydraulic elevators, ensuring correct electrical connections based on blueprints.
  • Utilize tools such as acetylene torches and power saws to cut and shape prefabricated components to specified dimensions.
  • Drill into concrete or structural steel as necessary to secure installations.
  • Install outer doors and frames at elevator entrances across various floors.
  • Run electrical wiring and controls through conduits along shaft walls.
  • Attach guide shoe rollers to elevators to minimize lateral movement during operation.
  • Connect car frames to counterweights using steel cables for stability.
  • Secure steel rails to shaft walls to guide elevator movement.
  • Position electric motors atop elevator shafts with the aid of hoists.
  • Modernize elevators by installing updated push-button controls and safety devices.
  • Conduct tests on newly installed equipment to ensure compliance with control specifications.
  • Perform inspections to verify that safety regulations and building codes are adhered to.
  • Diagnose malfunctions in brakes, motors, and control systems using various testing devices.
  • Adjust and repair components to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Maintain detailed logs of repairs and inspections performed.

Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with one to four years of relevant experience as an Elevator Technician. Familiarity with laws and standards related to elevator maintenance is essential. Proficiency in using hand tools and testing devices is necessary.

Personal Attributes:

The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, effective time management abilities, and a keen attention to detail. The role requires the ability to work independently while collaborating with others.

Physical Requirements:

This position involves regular communication, operation of mechanical equipment, and physical activities such as climbing, lifting, and working in confined spaces. Candidates should be prepared to lift weights up to 100 pounds and navigate various environmental conditions.
