Environmental Specialist

Job Summary:
The California Department of Food and Agriculture is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Scientist to join our team. As an Environmental Scientist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of California's produce by conducting on-farm environmental assessments and farm inspections to ensure compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the Produce Safety Rule (PSR).
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct on-farm environmental assessments and farm inspections to ensure compliance with FSMA and PSR
- Work with farmers to bring production/facility sites into compliance with FSMA requirements
- Develop and implement effective on-farm training and communication programs
- Collaborate with industry stakeholders to promote food safety practices
- Conduct inspections and procedural activities for the Produce Safety Program
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, agriculture, or a related field
- 2+ years of experience in environmental science, agriculture, or a related field
- Knowledge of FSMA and PSR regulations
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Working Conditions:
This position requires the incumbent to work cooperatively with others, maintain regular attendance, and exercise good judgment. The incumbent must have good written and oral communication skills and be able to work from home and travel to various locations throughout the state.
