Position Overview: The objective of Gaston County Parks and Recreation is to acquire, develop, maintain, and oversee parks; manage public resources effectively, and offer opportunities for community members to engage in enriching leisure activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain cleanliness of restrooms, collect litter, empty waste receptacles, and ensure park equipment is in good condition.
- Prepare multiple athletic fields for daily use, which includes utilizing field conditioners, raking, and marking lines with athletic paint and chalk.
- Respond to visitor inquiries and provide assistance to park guests.
- Operate various motorized vehicles and horticultural equipment as required, including mowers, gators, and weed eaters.
- Assist with special events in parks, which may involve directing traffic, setting up tents and stages, and performing other necessary tasks.
- Conduct landscaping duties such as pruning, trimming, and tree removal as needed.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of high school or GED equivalency is preferred. Experience in parks and recreation or grounds maintenance is advantageous. A valid driver's license without restrictions is mandatory.
Ability to operate various equipment and machinery is essential.
Physical capabilities must include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, feeling, talking, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and work outdoors in all weather conditions, with potential exposure to dust.
Additional Information:
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will start at 25% of the salary range: $16.89/hr. The selected candidate must pass a drug screening test prior to employment. Full-Time employees are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, retirement savings plans, and a pension with a 401K plan (with a 5% county contribution annually).
Part-Time employees may receive certain benefits such as pro-rated sick and annual leave, professional development opportunities, and a local government retirement plan. Half-Time employees are not eligible for benefits.
