The State and Local Sales and Use Tax team offers critical insights to our clients, addressing their most urgent sales tax challenges. Our consultants navigate a diverse array of industries and tax jurisdictions, assisting clients in identifying solutions and making informed decisions through thorough research of tax regulations, representing clients in tax disputes, and recommending strategies to reduce their sales tax obligations.

The Senior Manager of Sales and Use Tax at RSM will undertake the following responsibilities, centered around three fundamental areas: Technical & Quality Expertise, People & Talent Management, and Client Service/Business Development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver outstanding sales and use tax advisory and planning services to multi-state corporations, dedicating approximately 60% of your time to this task.
  • Drive business development within the State and Local tax practice by generating new revenue from existing clients, cross-selling services, and cultivating new client relationships, allocating around 30% of your time to these efforts.
  • Act as a Career Advisor, mentor, or coach to one or more team members, providing timely and constructive performance feedback, which will take up about 10% of your time.
  • Collaborate effectively with clients, local and regional RSM SALT teams, the broader RSM tax team, and RSM audit and consulting colleagues.
  • Oversee various sales and use tax consulting projects, including technical research memoranda, nexus studies, exposure quantification, voluntary disclosures, audit defense, and appeals.
  • Lead and manage complex engagements, focusing on delivering high-value, quality tax advice while seeking to expand services to clients.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Possession of one of the following credentials: CPA, CMI, JD, or LLM.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in providing sales and use tax consulting services within public accounting, consulting, or law firms.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of various state and local sales and use tax laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, including tax planning, restructuring, due diligence, audit defense, and state controversy work.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time.

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the capacity to prioritize multiple assignments effectively.
