Job Summary

A successful candidate in this position will serve as a General Engineer/Physical Scientist or the Nuclear Explosives Safety Study Group Chair. The incumbent is the principal resource for information and advice to senior managers in the NNSA for policy and technical judgments regarding discharge of responsibilities for protection of the public health and safety in NNSA nuclear explosive operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a Nuclear Explosive Safety (NES) expert and represents the Nuclear Explosive Safety Division regarding all nuclear explosive production, dismantlement, surveillance, and transportation operations and activities conducted by the NNSA.
  • Serve as a senior NES expert responsible for monitoring plant activities by interpreting and applying findings derived from the Nuclear Explosives Safety Study Group (NESSG) to determine the appropriateness of actions and remediation.
  • Maintain the Accident Response Group (ARG) Master Equipment List through incorporation of recommendations from ARG equipment reviews.
  • Develop NNSA policy directives governing the conduct of the NNSA Nuclear Explosive Safety Division for the review and approval of responsible senior NNSA Managers.
  • Consult with National Laboratories, the Pantex Plant, the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), the Office of Secure Transportation, Pantex and Nevada Field Offices and recommend approval of changes to nuclear explosive operations or makes a determination that a nuclear explosives safety study must be completed and approved before changes can be incorporated.
  • Originate correspondence to refine policies governing nuclear explosives operations; work directly with officials in NNSA, National Laboratories, and Production Plants, and NNSS to resolve nuclear explosive safety issues and originate recommendations for changes assuring conformance to NNSA Nuclear Explosive Safety Orders and Standards.

  • Must be able to obtain certification in the DOE's Technical Qualification Program (TQP) within 18 months of start date.
