Position Overview:

The State of Washington has an opening for a Psychiatric Child Care Counselor 2. In this role, you will foster a secure and nurturing therapeutic environment, positively influencing the lives of children and adolescents facing psychological and safety challenges.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team to implement evidence-based practices, providing counseling and treatment services to youth and their families.
  • Administer the cottage program and tailored behavioral plans.
  • Guide staff in delivering mentorship and situational counseling to children and adolescents in residential settings.
  • Facilitate the enhancement of social skills, problem-solving abilities, and decision-making skills, while assisting children with daily living activities.
  • Prepare treatment plan progress summaries and propose treatment objectives.
  • Oversee and evaluate the performance of Psychiatric Child Care Counselors, ensuring adherence to documentation standards and policies.
  • Conduct staff training and performance assessments, providing constructive feedback to supervisors.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels.
  • Implement interventions that are age-appropriate and developmentally suitable based on current treatment plans.
  • Encourage and participate in group or individual recreational, social, and therapeutic activities with patients.
  • Accompany patients to activities and medical appointments.
  • Respond to behavioral escalations effectively.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians, case workers, and probation officers regarding patient progress.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Education, Recreation, Psychology, or a related field, along with one year of social service experience, is required. Alternatively, two years of college with a focus in these areas and three years of professional social services or mental health experience will be considered.

Additional relevant experience may substitute for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis. Professional-level experience entails full-time work in social services or mental health fields.

Credentialing as an Agency Affiliated Counselor or a higher counseling-related credential from the Washington State Department of Health is mandatory within 60 days of hire.

  • Proficiency in counseling and motivating patients, maintaining composure during conflicts, and de-escalating challenging situations.
  • Capacity to observe patients for extended periods and supervise their daily routines, ensuring treatment and safety.
