Position Overview:

Psychiatric Child Care Counselor 2

This role offers a unique opportunity to serve as a Psychiatric Child Care Counselor, where you will cultivate a secure and nurturing therapeutic environment, positively influencing the lives of children and adolescents facing psychological challenges.

In this capacity, you will oversee staff and provide treatment, guidance, and supervision for youth experiencing emotional, psychological, and behavioral health difficulties within a psychiatric facility. You will acquire expertise through training in Motivational Interviewing, safety protocols, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team to implement evidence-based practices, offering counseling and treatment services to youth and their families.
  • Administer the cottage program and personalized behavioral plans.
  • Guide staff in delivering mentorship and situational counseling to children and adolescents in the cottages.
  • Facilitate the enhancement of social skills, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, while assisting children with daily living activities.
  • Complete treatment plan progress summaries and propose treatment objectives.
  • Oversee and evaluate the performance of Psychiatric Child Care Counselors, ensuring adherence to documentation standards and policies.
  • Train and assess staff performance, providing constructive feedback to supervisors.
  • Monitor staffing levels and implement age-appropriate interventions based on current treatment plans.
  • Encourage and engage patients in both group and individual recreational, social, and therapeutic activities.
  • Accompany patients to activities and medical appointments.
  • Intervene during behavioral escalations as necessary.
  • Communicate with parents, guardians, case workers, and probation officers regarding patient progress.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Education, Recreation, Psychology, or a related field, accompanied by one year of social service experience. Alternatively, two years of college with a focus on Social Sciences, Education, Recreation, Psychology, or a related field, along with three years of professional social services or mental health experience.

Additional relevant experience may substitute for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis. A credential as an Agency Affiliated Counselor or a higher counseling-related credential from the Washington State Department of Health is required within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Skills:
  • Proficiency in counseling and motivating patients, maintaining composure during conflicts, and de-escalating challenging situations.
  • Ability to observe patients for extended periods and supervise their daily routines, ensuring treatment efficacy and safety.
