Position Overview:

Psychiatric Child Care Counselor 2

This position offers an opportunity for a Psychiatric Child Care Counselor. You will foster a secure and nurturing therapeutic environment, positively influencing the lives of children and adolescents facing psychological and safety challenges.

In this capacity, you will guide staff in the treatment, counseling, and supervision of youth with emotional, psychological, and behavioral health concerns within a psychiatric care facility. You will acquire knowledge through training and experience in Motivational Interviewing, safety protocols, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team to model evidence-based practices, counsel, and deliver treatment services to youth and their families.
  • Implement individualized behavioral plans and the cottage program.
  • Lead staff in providing mentorship and situational counseling to children and adolescents in the cottages.
  • Facilitate the development of social skills, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, while assisting children with daily living activities.
  • Complete treatment plan progress summaries and propose treatment objectives.
  • Oversee and evaluate the work of Psychiatric Child Care Counselors, ensuring compliance with documentation standards and policies.
  • Train and assess staff performance, providing constructive feedback to supervisors.
  • Monitor staffing levels to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Implement age-appropriate interventions based on current treatment plans.
  • Encourage and engage patients in group or individual recreational, social, and therapeutic activities.
  • Escort patients to activities and medical appointments.
  • Intervene during behavioral escalations as necessary.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians, case workers, and probation officers regarding patient progress.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Education, Recreation, Psychology, or a related field, accompanied by one year of social service experience. Alternatively, two years of college with an emphasis in the aforementioned fields and three years of professional social services or mental health experience.

Additional professional experience may substitute for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis. Professional-level experience entails full-time work in social services or mental health.

Two years of experience as a Psychiatric Child Care Counselor 1 is also acceptable.

An Agency Affiliated Counselor credential or a higher counseling-related credential from the Washington State Department of Health is required within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Skills:
  • Ability to effectively counsel and motivate patients, maintain composure during conflicts, and de-escalate challenging situations.
  • Capacity to observe patients for extended periods and supervise their daily routines, ensuring treatment and safety.
