Research Associate Position in Physical Oceanography

MPOWIR Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention is seeking a recent Ph.D. in physical oceanography to join our team at the University of Washington Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

The successful candidate will study internal waves, mixing, and rotating hydraulics in the energetic abyssal flows of the Samoan Passage. The research will involve detailed observations from profiling moorings, lowered CTD/Doppler profilers, and turbulence profilers in two cruises, as well as numerical modeling of regional-scale flows and small-scale processes within the Passage.

The ideal candidate will participate in both cruises, assist in cruise planning and data collection, analyze the observations, and synthesize them with the model output. Depending on interest and skills, the candidate may also participate in running the models (MIT gcm and POM).

The work is funded by the National Science Foundation with Profs. Matthew Alford and James Girton as Principal Investigators. The initial appointment will extend for one year with a potential second and third year granted with satisfactory progress.

Requirements include a Ph.D. in physical oceanography and a proven ability to work at sea, sometimes under adverse conditions. Additional desired qualifications include familiarity with current practice in studying the internal tide, internal waves, hydraulically controlled flows, and mixing, as well as a working knowledge of MATLAB, as the candidate will be expected to take the lead in analyzing the observations.
