Sports Instruction Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY: The Oakland Unified School District is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Athletic Coach to lead and mentor students in their athletic pursuits. This role involves a commitment to fostering a positive and safe environment for student-athletes.
DUTIES:
- Provide instruction and coaching in the designated sport.
- Assist in organizing practice and competition schedules.
- Fulfill all coaching responsibilities associated with the position.
- Participate in mandatory meetings and training sessions as required by the district.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following criteria. Preference will be given to current certificated employees of the Oakland Unified School District holding a valid California teaching credential.
- Required certifications include:
- Injury prevention and treatment.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications, or proof of a college-level course in athletic injury care, or a valid EMT I or II card, or a valid Sports Injury Certificate.
- Certifications in Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Concussion, Heat Illness Prevention, and Fundamentals of Coaching (high school) or Coaching Middle School.
- COVID Safety training.
- Provide documentation demonstrating knowledge of coaching theories and techniques relevant to the sport. Acceptable evidence may include college coursework, previous coaching experience, or participation in the sport at the high school level.
- Familiarity with the rules and regulations governing high school sports.
- Understanding of adolescent psychology in relation to sports participation, which can be fulfilled through college courses or active involvement in youth sports programs.
- Ability to maintain high safety standards during practices and competitions.
- Exhibit high ethical standards concerning sportsmanship, fair play, and student relationships.
- Recognize the importance of communication with parents and school staff regarding any issues or emergencies that may arise during events.
- Knowledge of school policies and California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) regulations pertaining to athletics.
OVERALL APPLICANT ASSESSMENT: Candidates must demonstrate the ability to uphold the standards of the district's athletic program at each site. This includes fostering teamwork, commitment, and discipline among players, building positive relationships with parents and the community, and providing academic support to students. Previous successful coaching experience at the relevant level will be considered an asset in the evaluation of candidates.
