Job Description:

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an experienced materials engineer to join the Secondary Plant Advanced Materials (SPAM) team in our Pittsburgh location.

In this role, you will develop, test, and analyze advanced materials to support the existing and future fleet.

As part of the SPAM team, you will support the design and execution of corrosion testing of materials in unique high-temperature, high-pressure, and chemically aggressive environments with an emphasis on advanced and additively manufactured materials supporting their performance in Program secondary system applications.

You will be expected to work with technicians to successfully execute complex testing, perform non-destructive and destructive evaluations of test specimens, and prepare written technical reports.

Expertise in material performance/characterizations as well as corrosion mechanisms will be routinely utilized to provide technical support for emergent fleet and manufacturing issues on an as-needed basis.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience; or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Currently or previously NPE qualified; or CTE/ACRS and 1 year EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and 1 year as SRE.

Preferred Skills:

  • BS Degree or higher in Materials Science and Engineering or Chemical Engineering
  • Working knowledge and/or experience with standard materials testing and evaluation techniques, including, but not limited to, (1) Electrochemical Testing, (2) Mechanical Testing, (3) Microstructural Analysis, and (4) Chemical Analysis.
  • Knowledge of fracture mechanics and fatigue analysis.
  • Knowledge of advanced manufacturing techniques including Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), Direct Energy Deposition.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose root causes of failure/experience with corrosion failure analysis.
  • Understanding of electrochemical/corrosion mechanisms and concentrated chemistry interactions with passive metals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting, design and iterate testing, document technical information and verbally communicate results.

Pay Range:

$83, $130,700.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
