Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Aquatic Safety Specialist to join our team at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago. As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of members in the aquatics area, while also demonstrating competency to teach and lead specific skills and activities in the water.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Exceptional Customer Service: Deliver a high level of customer service to members, program participants, and guests at all times.
  • Supervise and Guard the Pool: Supervise and guard the pool and aquatic facility, ensuring participants adhere to all BGCC aquatic guidelines and procedures.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Examine injured persons, administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using training and medical supplies and equipment.
  • Rescue Distressed Persons: Rescue distressed persons using rescue techniques and equipment.
  • Communicate Effectively: Contact emergency medical personnel in case of serious injury and actively participate in obtaining further water safety certifications.
  • Attend Trainings and Meetings: Attend all in-service trainings and staff meetings as scheduled by supervisor or center leadership team.
Qualifications
  • Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Certifications: Must carry current/unexpired American Red Cross certification as well as current First Aid, AED, CPR, and Oxygen Administration certifications.
  • Physical Mobility: Physical mobility to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200 lb. person and meet other physical requirements required for job certification.
  • Mental Alertness: Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all swimmers.
  • Physical and Mental Ability: Must be physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
  • Ability to Meet Physical Requirements: Ability to meet physical requirements based on job description.
Environmental Conditions
  • Transportation: Must have reliable, insured private transportation.
  • Criminal Background Check: Must pass criminal background check which includes Livescan fingerprints.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination unless an exemption for medical condition or sincerely-held religious belief is granted.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment

The ability to pass lifeguard physical prerequisites is required. The ability to remain alert and vigilant, sit and stand for extended periods, and continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision is also necessary. The ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue and communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations, is also required.
