Senior Counsel for Employment and Labor Issues

Position Overview:
The Senior Counsel operates autonomously at a law firm mid-to-senior associate level, possessing substantial expertise in labor, employment, and employee benefits law. A foundational understanding of healthcare operations and business practices is advantageous. The Senior Counsel is expected to effectively oversee legal matters pertaining to labor, employment, employee benefits, and associated litigation. Key areas of required proficiency encompass federal and state employment regulations, anti-discrimination statutes, wage and hour legislation, occupational injury laws, and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), including relevant exemptions. Familiarity with National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) regulations, state non-competition statutes, antitrust laws, litigation processes, investigations, negotiation, and dispute resolution is essential.
The Senior Counsel may collaborate with other legal professionals within the department on issues related to clinical peer review involving employees, compliance with HIPAA privacy and security standards, Affirmative Action Plans, and responses to governmental inquiries concerning labor and employment compliance.
The ideal candidate should exhibit initiative, independent judgment, and a commitment to delivering timely, professional, and courteous service. The Senior Counsel may act as the primary legal contact for designated entities and must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with members of the Legal Department and other staff to achieve organizational objectives.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution
- Comprehensive understanding of labor and employment laws and regulations
- Exceptional writing and analytical capabilities
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Proficient in engaging with internal clients regarding complex operations and transactions
- Ability to efficiently review, analyze, and apply extensive information related to operations and transactions
- Capacity to provide support to Vice Presidents and Associate General Counsels, as well as collaborate as a team member.
Experience Requirements:
- A minimum of four years of experience in a law firm or in-house environment focusing on labor and employment law.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Unrestricted license to practice law in Texas or Louisiana; dual licensure is a plus.
