San Francisco, California, United States Astranis Full time

Astranis is dedicated to closing the digital gap by connecting the billions of individuals globally who currently lack internet access. We are achieving this by developing the next generation of compact, cost-efficient spacecraft to bring connectivity to the world.

Our team has successfully launched multiple satellites into orbit, secured numerous commercial agreements exceeding $1 billion in revenue, raised substantial funding from leading global investors, and built a talented workforce of over 300 exceptional engineers. Our office, a historic site previously used for shipbuilding during the World Wars, is located in San Francisco.

Our satellites, which function from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh merely 400 kg and employ a proprietary software-defined radio payload. Each satellite has the capability to connect over two million individuals, and we are eager to witness the positive impact we will have in various regions including the Philippines, Peru, and Mexico.

With robust financial backing and a committed, collaborative team, we provide a fulfilling work environment where you will learn and make a significant contribution, regardless of your career stage.

Position: Communications/DSP Engineer - Intern

Internships at Astranis generally span twelve weeks and are hourly positions intended for students currently enrolled in a four-year university.

As an intern, you will have a remarkable opportunity to tackle challenging problems - we take pride in empowering everyone at Astranis to engage in meaningful work on complex projects, irrespective of their experience level. Many previous interns have designed and tested hardware/software destined for space on our inaugural satellite, and many have transitioned into full-time roles at Astranis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design signal processing algorithms for custom software-defined radio hardware (e.g., channelization, equalization, power amplifier linearization, gain control, carrier synchronization, symbol mapping, framing, channel coding/FEC, etc.)
  • Collaborate closely with FPGA developers to implement and validate the signal processing on radio hardware.
  • Model the complete radio system from earth to space and back.
  • Conduct radio architecture trade studies, execute link budgets, and optimize the radio system for peak performance across various markets and applications worldwide.
Qualifications
  • A strong enthusiasm for working in a dynamic environment and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Solid foundation in signals and systems (basic transforms, filters, aliasing, analysis in both continuous and discrete domains, interpolation, decimation, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of digital communications (modulation, coding, synchronization, fading, Doppler effect, multiple access, channel capacity, etc.).
  • Familiarity with software development (some experience in writing software for DSP, MCU, and/or FPGA, and proficiency in one or more scripting languages).
  • Knowledge of analog concepts (amplifiers, analog filters, gain and delay variation, reflections, compression, etc.).
  • Experience with signal generators, signal analyzers, network analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Green Card is required.
  • If you do not meet all the criteria, we still encourage you to apply.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with software-defined radios.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Familiarity with GNU Radio.
  • Experience in FPGA development (and/or embedded C).
The base pay for this position is $29.00 per hour.

U.S. Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Residency, or Refugee/Asylee Status Required

(To comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents of the United States, or other protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)).
