POSITION OVERVIEW AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Laboratory Manager is accountable for overseeing the personnel and operational functions across various laboratory settings. This role ensures the optimal use of resources to deliver prompt and precise laboratory testing outcomes, adhering to the standards set forth by accreditation bodies and federal/state reimbursement entities. Additionally, the position may involve serving as a technical advisor for the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) initiative, collaborating with non-laboratory testing personnel at outpatient facilities within the University Health System. The manager will engage with nursing staff, physicians, and other departments, as well as the Pathology Services management team, as necessary. Other essential duties may be assigned as required.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field such as chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution is required. Alternatively, a high school diploma or equivalent, coupled with successful completion of military training lasting 50 weeks or more, with experience as a medical laboratory specialist, is acceptable. A minimum of three years of clinical laboratory experience in the relevant department is mandatory, with at least one year of supervisory experience preferred.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE

Candidates must possess certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). Alternatively, certification in a specialty relevant to the laboratory area is required, provided the candidate does not hold a Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent) certification. It is essential to maintain certification status in accordance with the continuing education requirements established by the certifying agency.
