POSITION OVERVIEW AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Laboratory Manager is accountable for overseeing personnel and operational functions across various laboratory settings. This role ensures the effective use of resources to deliver prompt and precise laboratory testing outcomes, adhering to the standards set forth by accreditation bodies and federal/state reimbursement entities. The position may also involve serving as a technical advisor for the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) initiative, which includes collaborating with non-laboratory testing personnel at outpatient facilities within the University Health System. Regular interaction with nursing staff, physicians, and other departments, as well as management within Pathology Services, is essential. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution is required. Alternatively, a high school diploma or equivalent, combined with successful completion of military training of 50 weeks or more as a medical laboratory specialist, is acceptable. A minimum of three years of clinical laboratory experience in the relevant department is mandatory, with at least one year of supervisory experience preferred.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE
Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) is required. Alternatively, certification in a specialty relevant to the laboratory area of employment is necessary, although this does not include a Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent) certification. It is important to maintain certification status in accordance with the continuing education requirements set by the certifying agency.
