Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Food Safety Manager to join our team at Harris Teeter. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for managing our retail food safety programs, providing support and guidance to our whole company and operations management in the areas of food safety, sanitation, and pest control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage department 3rd party vendors, including auditing, sanitation, pest control, and digital HACCP to drive consistency and maintain compliance.
  • Monitor and evaluate our quarterly food safety & sanitation 3rd party audit program, communicating findings and trends to corporate leadership.
  • Act as an advocate during interaction with regulatory agencies and industry food safety groups, establishing and maintaining relationships with appropriate regulatory agencies in our operating geography.
  • Review and follow-up as necessary on all regulatory inspection reports pertaining to food safety, sanitation, weights & measures, and food labeling.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to assist store operations in resolving issues identified during quarterly food safety appraisals and regulatory inspections, developing corrective actions and implementing preventive measures.
  • Manage a team of specialists (internal or external) that provide Operations with field support to educate operators on company food safety standards.
  • Focus on continuously improving and strengthening food safety by collaborating with internal teams and external resources, working cross-functionally with other departments as necessary for special projects and initiative roll-outs.
  • Work with Training & Development to identify, develop, and implement training for food safety & sanitation.
  • Conduct internal food safety training sessions for store associates, delivering Food Manager Certification training and testing for required management positions.
  • Manage and monitor our pest control program at retail.
  • Assist with QA department programs, including product recalls and withdrawals, customer complaints, label review, and vendor audits.
  • Develop and maintain an extensive Distribution Center audit program following established sanitation programs and the Distribution Center Food Safety Plan.
  • Assist in managing HACCP programs at 2 Distribution Centers.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of food safety materials, conducting program review annually to verify compliance with regulatory and company standards.
  • Respond and support with an array of crisis and emergency situations/imminent health hazards, which could result in injury, disruption of business, or potential regulatory enforcement action.
  • Conduct investigations for food-related illness and injury claims.
  • Act as backup for Recall program management.
  • Participate in plan review for remodels and new store builds.
  • Compile data and metrics from various sources for company scorecards.
Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) from a four-year college or university, with a technical background in Environmental Health, Food Science, Biology, Microbiology, or food safety-related courses.
  • At least 7 years of experience in retail food service sanitation and food safety through auditing, inspecting, or application.
  • Must have knowledge of HACCP, SSOPs, GMPs, FDA, and all other applicable State and local health and food safety codes and principles related to food service, for our operating area.
  • Strong applied knowledge of retail food safety and competent knowledge of current food safety practices.
  • Experienced and qualified in conducting food safety manager training sessions.
  • Ability to manage a team.
  • Experience in managing vendor partner relationships.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered CP-FS or Registered Sanitarian.
  • PCQI Lead Instructor.
