Position Overview: The Library Services Assistant plays a vital role in delivering outstanding customer and informational support at the library service desks. This position is tailored for student employees eager to acquire foundational experience in an academic library environment, including comprehensive training to ensure proficient task execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver exceptional customer service at the primary service desk.
  • Manage the check-in and check-out processes for all library materials.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of library policies, procedures, and available services.
  • Execute basic circulation functions within the Integrated Library System (ILS) with elevated permissions.
  • Navigate the library's website and online resources effectively.
  • Handle incoming library calls, directing them appropriately and leaving detailed messages for staff as necessary.
  • Monitor food and beverage presence in public library areas.
  • Assist patrons with basic reference inquiries, referring to permanent staff when necessary.
  • Support patrons in completing paper and online forms (recall, storage, acquisitions requests, etc.).
  • Organize and shelve library materials according to their call numbers.
  • Engage in ongoing projects and tasks assigned by supervisors (shelf reading, inventory, dusting, displays, gift searching).
  • Process and package items for OhioLINK.
  • Work weekend shifts and during times when no permanent library staff are available.
  • Act as the circulation desk supervisor in the absence of permanent staff.
  • Create library patron accounts for designated special borrowers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Compensation: $12.00 per hour.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and patrons.
  • Commitment to managing and adhering to scheduling obligations.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Capability to lift library materials and reach for shelving purposes is essential.
  • Ability to understand and follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Familiarity with basic computer tasks and online searching.
  • Minimum commitment of four hours per week.
  • Previous experience in a library setting is preferred but not mandatory.

Performance Evaluation: All Library Services Assistants will undergo continuous evaluation and monitoring, with one formal assessment conducted annually in collaboration with their supervisor.
