Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Water Treatment Plant Operator or Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee to join our team at the City of Corvallis, OR. As a key member of our Public Works Department, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our water treatment plants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and control plant operation and treatment processes to maximize treatment efficiency
  • Meet State regulations and complete plant operation shift duties, including Direct Responsible Charge duties, per rotation requirements
  • Coordinate and monitor day-to-day shift activities, including making process control changes
  • Respond to customer service questions and concerns, including residential, industrial, and commercial sites
  • Provide information to the public through tours, one-on-one interactions, and presentations
  • Perform site visits to residential properties as needed to troubleshoot complaints or concerns
  • Respond to plant and off-site facility alarms or call-outs as needed to ensure continuous operation and regulatory compliance
  • Perform preventive maintenance and routine modifications and repairs on plant equipment, buildings, and grounds
  • Assist with major maintenance and coordinate associated efforts with other work groups and contractors
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems as they arise
  • Participate in short and long-range planning regarding daily activities, process control, maintenance, safety, plant modifications, and water quality
  • Identify and assist in addressing plant and system needs
  • Recommend and implement new projects and programs
  • Coordinate activities and communications with other operators and work groups
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associates degree in Water Technology preferred
  • Experience in the operation of a surface water treatment plant (Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee) or conventional water treatment plant (Water Treatment Plant Operator)
  • Specialized training in water treatment that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position
  • Oregon Water Operator certification (Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee) or Grade Level II certification with a filtration endorsement (Water Treatment Plant Operator)
  • First Aid and CPR certification, Confined Space Entry, and Forklift Operation or the ability to obtain within one year of appointment
  • Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid Oregon Driver's License
  • Ability to respond within 60 minutes or less to the Taylor Water Treatment Plant for after-hours calls or emergencies prior to the end of probationary period
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in water treatment plant operation and maintenance
  • Knowledge of water treatment technical processes, procedures, and operations
  • Ability to use sound judgment in applying knowledge to immediate/emergency situations and in prioritizing ongoing responsibilities
  • Effective communication, analytical, customer service, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work varying shifts, dependent on plant flow, customer demand, and time of year
