ROLE FOCUS

This position emphasizes a patient-centered methodology in delivering treatments, conducting patient evaluations, and managing all facets of patient care. The role fosters professional development and growth as an emergency veterinary technician, offering pathways for advancement toward a Veterinary Technician Specialist certification and involvement in care coordination. Veterinary technicians operate autonomously, utilizing critical thinking and leadership skills to implement patient treatment strategies in collaboration with the veterinary team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

All clinical team members are expected to:

  • Provide each patient and client with the utmost compassion and care.
  • Execute basic to intermediate nursing care tasks, monitor patients, and administer treatments.
  • Utilize knowledge of common illnesses and conditions, along with physical assessments, to accurately triage incoming patients.
  • Administer medications via subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous routes, while being aware of potential side effects.
  • Set up, monitor, and deliver intravenous fluid therapy, including constant rate infusions and blood transfusions.
  • Contribute to both incoming outpatient and ongoing inpatient care.
  • Engage in patient rounds to ensure seamless continuity of care.
  • Be trained to perform all aspects of CPR as a RECOVER Certified Rescuer.
  • Collect samples and conduct diagnostic tests, including in-house and point-of-care assessments.
  • Perform nursing tasks such as placing and maintaining urinary catheters, nasoenteral tubes, and oxygen tubes.
  • Set up and manage oxygen cages and other oxygen delivery methods.

Veterinary technicians also undertake:

  • Monitoring and maintaining patients under general anesthesia, with or without mechanical ventilation, for varied risk levels.
  • Advanced vascular access techniques, including jugular catheter placement and arterial catheterization.
  • Advanced diagnostic procedures, such as ultrasonography and paracentesis.
  • Participation in developing treatment, anesthetic, and nursing care plans.
  • Executing treatments using clinical decision-making skills in accordance with established protocols.
  • Assisting in managing patient care workloads to ensure uncompromised care.
  • Coaching and guiding veterinary assistants and nurses in clinical tasks to uphold care standards and promote growth.
  • Collaborating and sharing insights with team members to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Seeking additional training along guided growth pathways for roles beyond direct nursing care, such as VTS certification and leadership opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Credentialed as a veterinary technician (CVT, RVT, LVT, LVMT) in the relevant location.
  • Veterinary technician specialist (VTS) certification will be considered favorably for practice roles and compensation.
  • Basic computer skills for practice management and electronic medical records.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a veterinary technician capacity, with a preference for emergency or specialty medicine experience.
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, and electronic) with both team members and clients.
  • Fine motor skills sufficient for operating hospital equipment, including syringes and diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, kneel, work on the floor, and lift up to 25 kg independently, with the capacity to support up to 40 kg with assistance.
