Role Overview

The Tire Performance Testing division at Calspan offers specialized tire research and testing services. Our laboratory's unique capabilities assist innovators in evaluating and comprehending tire performance and characteristics for a wide range of tires, including those utilized in automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, aircraft, off-road vehicles, military applications, and motorsports. The Operations Manager for TIRF oversees the upkeep of testing facilities while supporting operational activities. This role involves maintaining and enhancing the electrical and mechanical systems of the test facilities and implementing process improvements to boost operational efficiency.

  • Monitor the progress of test programs, providing feedback to both the testing crew and clients.
  • Utilize engineering methodologies to accurately allocate tasks within budget and timelines.
  • Assist in schedule maintenance, risk assessment, data quality monitoring, and cross-shift communication.
  • Analyze maintenance and equipment performance reports to plan and adjust maintenance activities accordingly.
  • Recommend and implement cost-effective modifications to facilities and equipment while ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory system for critical spare parts and operational supplies.
  • Create technical documentation, including engineering plans, requirement definitions, test procedures, and related analytical reports.
  • Establish and enforce policies, standards, and procedures for engineering and technical work within the department.
  • Maintain engineering drawings, including layouts and three-dimensional models.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Over 6 years of experience in a testing or manufacturing environment.
  • Previous management experience or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the above.

Desired Skills and Knowledge

  • Familiarity with experimental testing methodologies.
  • Understanding of tire testing best practices.
  • Knowledge of complex systems, including data acquisition, signal conditioning, and instrumentation.
  • Experience with facility maintenance methods and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret and manage engineering plans and specifications.
  • Understanding of project management principles (metrics, tracking, etc.).
  • Knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Experience with Python, Matlab, and 3D CAD design software.
