Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Senior Air Quality Engineer and project leadership of an Air Quality Engineer II, the Air Quality Engineer I performs staff-level engineering work within the Certification and Schools Support Unit. Key responsibilities include technical support for the Smog Check Program, evaluation and reporting of Smog Check Program effectiveness, support for Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Enforcement-related activities, and support for the development and certification of new inspection equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support for the Smog Check Program, including evaluation and reporting of program effectiveness.
  • Support Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Enforcement-related activities, including development and implementation of new inspection equipment.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including reports, presentations, and training materials.
  • Participate in project planning, coordination, and implementation, including development of project plans, schedules, and budgets.
Working Conditions:

The incumbent works 40 hours per week, primarily in an office setting with occasional fieldwork. The office environment is well-lit and temperature-controlled, with access to modern office equipment and technology. Fieldwork may involve working in extreme temperatures, varied weather conditions, and exposure to hazardous materials. The incumbent is required to wear safety equipment and follow safety procedures.

Special Requirements:
  • Medical clearance prior to hire.
  • Pass a medical exam to ensure fitness for duty.
