Job Description and Duties

The Advanced Monitoring Techniques Section (AMTS) is a dedicated team within the California Air Resources Board (CARB), responsible for implementing air monitoring projects using cutting-edge technologies and methods. Our goal is to develop, run, and support community air monitoring projects to identify and quantify air quality impacts from industrial facilities and other potential sources, leading to effective emissions and exposure reduction actions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the deployment, operation, and logistics for real-time and discrete sampling instrumentation in the Study of Neighborhood Air near Petroleum Sources (SNAPS) and support other toxics-focused community monitoring projects.
  • Apply scientific methods and principles to design and implement community air monitoring plans, develop quality assurance project plans, write technical papers, manage equipment procurement, and administer relevant contracts.
  • Correspond with outside agencies, staff of other CARB divisions, and the public to develop and report on community air monitoring programs.
  • Periodic travel throughout California may be required, with up to 20% travel possible.
Working Conditions:

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

Requirements:
  • Requires being stationary, consistent with office work, for extended periods.
  • Standard office environment (artificial lighting, controlled temperature, etc.)
  • Must be able to move/transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • During instrument testing, deployment, and maintenance in the field, and certain meetings, telework is not possible and the employee will be required on site.
Special Requirements:
