Job Summary

The Laboratory Operations Specialist plays a crucial role in the analysis and testing of animal feed and fertilizer samples. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting sample analyses, supporting method development, and ensuring the quality control and compliance of the laboratory with all applicable federal, state, and university policies and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducting analytical preparation operations, including weighing and processing samples, and performing complex assignments such as sample extractions, digestions, and instrument analyses
  • Establishing priorities to ensure samples are processed correctly and produce reliable and defensible data in a timely manner
  • Assisting with method development, instrument validation, and participation in collaborative studies
  • Assisting with proficiency program data processing and reporting, and ensuring quality control and compliance of the lab
  • Preparing samples for further analyses, including receiving, identifying, sorting, subsampling, grinding, transporting, storing, and discarding animal feed, fertilizer, and seed samples
  • Assisting chemists with the cleaning of glassware and equipment used for routine laboratory procedures
  • Providing operational support, including limited oversight of student workers, assisting others with research or special projects, and participating in lab certification requirements
  • Operating or assisting in the operation of laboratory equipment, including hotplates, analytical balances, digestors, extractors, and complex analytical instruments
  • Ensuring the laboratory is in a safe and proper working order
  • Performing miscellaneous assignments, including ordering supplies, discarding materials, maintaining laboratory areas, entering data, and filing paperwork
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced lab environment and work hard during peak periods
  • Ability to document and maintain detailed laboratory records
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
Nice to Have:
  • Experience working in a laboratory
  • Experience with writing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management or data processing systems
  • Familiarity with Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Some customer service experience
