Job Summary

The Laboratory Operations Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the Food Entrepreneurship and Manufacturing Institute (FEMI) by overseeing and executing technical processes necessary for client projects to scale from idea to commercialization. This position will manage the activities of the Skidmore Product Development Lab in the Food Science department, investigate and develop solutions to complex problems requiring the application of scientific principles, and set up, operate, maintain, and repair pilot plant and product development laboratory equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist Principal Investigators and faculty with design and execution of extrusion trials for FEMI clients and research efforts.
  • Support the Pilot Plant Manager in the operation of pilot plant equipment.
  • Contribute to experimental design and communicate with students regarding technical needs of each specific project.
  • Serve as an expert on analytical equipment utilization and troubleshooting used in FEMI projects.
  • Support the FEMI Managing Director in engagement with industry clients from exploratory conversations to delivering technical content in final presentations.
  • Assist with design, execution, and analysis of experimental approaches depending on the scope of work for each project.
  • Research industry standards through scholarly publications to support product development needs.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current methods and research through professional reading and literature search and other learning opportunities.
  • Support technical workshop delivery.
  • Oversee scheduling, utilization, and organization of the Skidmore Product Development Lab to manage usage of classes, product development teams, research projects, workshops, and FEMI tasks.
  • Assume full responsibility for the safety, operation, and continued development of the Skidmore Lab.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in food science or a related field.
  • Self-motivated and supportive of student success.
  • Ability to utilize independent judgment to solve problems.
  • Excellent organizational skills to effectively handle multiple ongoing tasks and strive for continuous improvement.
  • Familiarity with food processing, culinary, sensory, and preservation principles.
  • General knowledge of software systems, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of basic food chemistry, structure, and processing and how they interact to impact product quality and characteristics.
  • Attention to detail and focus on accuracy.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
Nice to Have:
  • Experience in a food manufacturing facility or pilot plant.
