Job Overview

Salary: $29.16-$38.98/hr

Organization: The California Appellate Project (CAP) is currently seeking candidates for the role of Case Investigation Specialist. This position is integral to the Habeas Team and the Unrepresented Project Team, providing essential litigation support for clients facing legal challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with clients and legal teams to formulate investigation strategies and collect vital life history and case documentation.
  2. Analyze transcripts, legal documents, and witness statements to prepare for evidence gathering and interviews.
  3. Conduct document searches, submit record requests, and manage incoming documentation in accordance with CAP protocols.
  4. Engage in regular client interviews, utilizing various communication methods to ensure comprehensive information gathering.
  5. Familiarize oneself with correctional facility regulations to effectively advocate for clients.
  6. Develop and maintain working documents for litigation purposes, including timelines, family trees, and indices.
  7. Travel as necessary to collect records or conduct witness interviews in person.
  8. Research relevant topics related to clients' backgrounds or case histories as determined by the team.
  9. Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  10. Create informative materials for internal use and the defense community.
  11. Oversee the work of students and volunteers.

Qualifications:

  1. Preferred fluency in Spanish.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and the ability to work with individuals affected by systemic issues.
  3. Knowledge of procedures for obtaining various types of records.
  4. Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  6. Able to work collaboratively with attorneys and support staff.
  7. Discretion and sound judgment in handling confidential information.
  8. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and willing to learn additional software.
  9. Willingness to travel as required.
  10. Understanding of legal concepts and research techniques.
  11. Proactive in identifying investigative leads.
  12. Ability to meet deadlines consistently.
  13. Possession of a college degree.
  14. Valid California Driver's License.
  15. Capability to obtain clearance for prison visits.

Work Environment:

CAP is located conveniently near public transportation. There is potential for part-time remote work arrangements.

Compensation: $38.98/hr (Annualized pay range: $60,000 - $81,000)
