Position Summary

This position is intended for a nurse who serves as a clinical and professional leader within the unit. The role involves demonstrating effective leadership skills to promote evidence-based practices, spearheading unit governance initiatives, and mentoring colleagues to foster their professional growth.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice:

1. Deliver independent care to a specific patient demographic; act as a clinical resource for team members, integrating evidence into practice, and fulfilling specialized roles as required.

A. Accountable for patient care processes and outcomes during treatment episodes.

B. Responsible for enhancing group practice on the unit and reporting to the nurse manager regarding overall performance.

2. Serve as a clinical expert and resource for nursing staff, providing informal and formal education opportunities.

3. Propel clinical practices forward, consistently applying evidence-based methods as a foundation for unit operations.

Quality and Service:

1. Lead initiatives aimed at improving Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI); design, implement, and assess action plans.

2. Direct performance improvement projects, ensuring effective evaluation and dissemination of results.

3. Monitor safety standards within the unit; actively participate in the development and execution of improvement strategies.

4. Mentor nursing staff on performance improvement and evidence-based practices.

5. Engage in regulatory compliance activities within the unit or organization.

6. Spearhead the development of performance improvement or evidence-based practice initiatives at the unit level.

Unit Operations:

1. Assume charge nurse responsibilities as scheduled; provide guidance to new charge nurses.

2. Oversee the unit orientation program and plan clinical experiences for new staff.

3. Act as a liaison for various departments, ensuring smooth operations.

4. Mentor and coach nursing staff to enhance their skills and maintain competencies.

5. Model and uphold Health Work Environment standards, including effective communication and collaboration.

6. Familiarize nurses with the unit's governance structure and councils.

Professional Development:

1. Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new nurses and students.

A. Guide unit leaders and those in leadership roles on governance initiatives.

B. Facilitate the development of ancillary personnel skills and lead peer review processes.

2. Actively pursue personal professional growth and serve as a role model for others.

Qualifications

1. Must hold a valid Registered Nurse license in Maryland or be eligible under Compact state agreements.

2. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.

3. Current CPR certification is mandatory.

4. Relevant clinical experience in the unit's practice area is essential.

5. Maintain 20 contact hours of continuing education every two years.

6. Membership in a professional nursing organization is required.

7. Must work at least 0.50 FTE.

8. ACLS certification is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Possess current specialty certification or be actively engaged in advanced education or formal teaching. Demonstrated ability to lead clinical practices and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Proficient in using computer systems for managing patient information and demonstrating the necessary knowledge and skills for patient care across the lifespan.
