Responsibilities

As a MAINTENANCE WORKER HELPER, your responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Assisting in the handling, transporting, and installation of outdoor water systems, as well as cleaning clogged water pipes and sewer lines, and renovating building interiors and exteriors, including replacing worn plumbing fixtures.
  • Performing minor electrical maintenance such as changing light bulbs and replacing light fixtures, switches, and outlets.
  • Aiding in the installation, repair, and modification of cabinets, doors, and hardware, including interior trim like sheetrock and baseboards.
  • Utilizing woodworking tools to cut and shape materials, as well as sanding and finishing surfaces.
  • Preparing and painting both interior and exterior surfaces by scraping off old paint and applying new finishes using brushes, rollers, or sprayers.
  • Assisting in mixing and pouring concrete and constructing simple forms.
  • Cleaning machinery and painting equipment as necessary.
  • Operating various types of trucks to transport cargo or passengers within designated areas.
  • Washing and fueling vehicles, including checking and changing oil, water, and other fluid levels, as well as tire maintenance.
  • Maintaining watercraft in safe working order.
  • Ensuring that safety equipment and supplies are readily available for field personnel.
  • Maintaining grounds by mowing, mulching, trimming shrubs, and applying weed control measures.
  • Keeping walking trails and observation points clear of debris and making simple repairs as needed.
  • Installing and maintaining informational signage and exhibits for visitors.
  • Ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of visitor facilities, including regular cleaning of restrooms and trash receptacles.
  • Keeping buildings such as meeting rooms and offices clean and well-maintained.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Submission of a comprehensive resume is required.
  • Eligibility and supporting documents must be submitted as outlined in the required documents section.
  • Suitability for employment will be determined through a background investigation.
  • A valid State driver's license may be required.
  • Uniform may be required.
  • A probationary period may be necessary.
  • Registration for the Selective Service is required for individuals assigned male at birth.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the qualifications outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C. Although specific experience or education is not mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum level of ability relevant to the position and complete the Assessment Questionnaire to be rated qualified.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: The ability to perform the duties of this position without excessive supervision is essential.

  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair of grounds, structures, and utilities.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Understanding of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and follow safety protocols.

Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service that contributes to the necessary skills and competencies for this role.

Education

No educational substitution for experience is allowed for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
