Responsibilities

As a FACILITIES MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT, your responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks including but not limited to:

  • Assisting in the handling, transporting, and securing of materials while engaging in the installation of outdoor water systems, clearing obstructed water pipes and sewer lines, and renovating building interiors and exteriors, as well as replacing outdated plumbing fixtures. This includes performing minor tasks such as removing and replacing broken window panes and repairing small leaks in roofs across various structures.
  • Conducting minor electrical maintenance, which involves changing light bulbs, swapping out light fixtures, and replacing electrical switches and outlets.
  • Supporting the installation, repair, and modification of cabinets, doors, and hardware by managing tools and materials effectively.
  • Utilizing woodworking tools to cut, shape, sand, and finish materials as needed.
  • Preparing and applying paint to both interior and exterior surfaces, ensuring a clean and professional finish.
  • Assisting in the mixing and pouring of cement for simple construction tasks.
  • Cleaning machinery and applying paint to equipment to maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Operating various types of trucks for transporting cargo or passengers within designated areas.
  • Performing routine maintenance on vehicles, including washing, fueling, and checking fluid levels.
  • Ensuring that necessary safety equipment is readily available for field personnel.
  • Maintaining outdoor areas by mowing, mulching, and managing weeds and shrubs.
  • Keeping walking trails and observation points clear and well-maintained.
  • Installing and maintaining informational signage and exhibits for visitors.
  • Ensuring cleanliness and upkeep of visitor facilities, including regular maintenance of restrooms and trash receptacles.
  • Keeping station buildings clean and organized through regular cleaning tasks.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

  • A valid State driver's license may be required during employment.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the qualifications as outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C. While specific experience, education, or training is not mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum level of ability related to the position. The assessment will consider all relevant experience, including volunteer work.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: The ability to perform the duties of this position with minimal supervision is essential.

  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair of grounds, structures, and utilities.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Understanding of equipment assembly and repair.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and adhere to safety protocols.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
