Position Overview

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and identify learning and behavioral challenges, including environmental factors within the school that may contribute to student difficulties.
  • Assess and, when feasible, adjust social-emotional, cultural, and economic factors, as well as other environmental influences that adversely affect a child's academic success.
  • Engage parents as essential partners in the educational journey. Keep them informed about their child's progress, attitude, and behavior, and maintain accessibility for any inquiries.
  • Lead academic discussions with parents regarding student promotion concerns.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students.
  • Consult with school personnel and parents regarding the developmental growth of individual students.
  • Collaborate with school staff, including other mental health professionals assigned to the institution.
  • Work alongside special education teachers and serve as a liaison with the Committee on Special Education (CSE).
  • Conduct mandatory workshops on child abuse and neglect for all school staff.
  • Advocate for children and parents on issues negatively affecting a child's academic performance.
  • Coordinate with various agencies (such as DSS, DJJ) and institutions (including churches and universities) to facilitate positive changes for students and families, enhancing school adjustment and achievement.
  • Monitor school climate and seek ways to positively influence the environment for students.
  • Participate as a member of Crisis Intervention Teams.
  • Offer group counseling, educational workshops, and other resources to parents on topics like parenting and stress management.

Compensation Transparency: The salary range for this position is $62,500 - $98,000. The base salary offered may vary within this range based on several factors, including but not limited to education, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.

Qualifications
  • New York State Certification in School Counseling is required.
  • A Master's Degree in School Counseling is required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities are necessary.
  • Capability to interact effectively with all levels of school personnel, students, and parents.
  • Aptitude for liaising with community organizations.
  • Demonstrated strategies to mitigate inappropriate student behaviors and enhance classroom or school climate.
