THE POSITION

Sheriff's Security Officers play a vital role in assisting sworn personnel by providing security and safeguarding County properties and public agency facilities against threats such as fire, theft, vandalism, and trespassing. These positions do not hold peace officer status.

Officers are required to carry a firearm and must exercise independent judgment to discern when to employ counseling, admonition, or explanation to maintain a peaceful environment, or when law enforcement intervention is necessary.

The eligible list generated from this recruitment will be utilized to fill both full-time and part-time regular, limited-term, or extra-help positions as vacancies arise throughout the County.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Depending on the assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Monitoring fixed posts or the inner/outer perimeters of one or more facilities or campuses to prevent individuals or groups from engaging in harmful acts towards others or property.
  • Intervening to halt harmful actions, conducting searches for weapons or contraband, and detaining individuals for further investigation or arrest when warranted.
  • Guiding visitors to appropriate personnel and services within a facility.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school graduation or satisfactory completion of an acceptable General Education Development Test (GED).
  • Possession of a certificate demonstrating satisfactory completion of a POST course on PC 832 (arrest and firearms training) within six months of appointment. Completion of a basic law enforcement academy may substitute for the PC 832 certificate.
  • A valid Class C California driver's license is required.
BACKGROUND: A Peace Officer Standard & Training (POST) background investigation is mandatory prior to employment commencement. A Personal History Statement (PHS) is part of this investigation.

SELECTION PROCESS
Qualified applicants may be invited for further examination based on the information provided in the application documents. The selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination thereof. A minimum score of 70% is required to progress in the selection process.
