Job Summary: The TRiO Peer Mentor initiative connects upper-class students with incoming freshmen and transfer students who are interested in the TRiO SSS program. Peer Mentors are assigned to 10 to 15 new students, referred to as Mentees. They proactively reach out to new participants prior to the commencement of classes, address inquiries, and familiarize students with the resources available through the TRiO SSS program. Following the start of classes, Mentors and Mentees engage in various activities throughout the semester aimed at fostering supportive and intentional relationships. The Mentor Program emphasizes connecting Mentees to the supportive culture of TRiO, providing access to academic resources, and establishing a relationship with an informed peer. Mentors and Mentees collaborate in both individual and group settings. It is important to note that a TRiO SSS Peer Mentor does not replace professional counseling or academic advising services.
Minimum Qualifications: Must be a currently enrolled participant in the TRiO SSS program. Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5; special circumstances may be considered. Must complete the application form and arrange a personal interview with the program coordinator. Must provide one letter of reference from a faculty or staff member, or a student leader on campus. Must attend training in the spring following selection and prior to the start of the fall semester. Must demonstrate responsibility for self, a strong desire to assist others, and a willingness to share personal transition experiences.
Preferred Qualifications: Should possess a desire to serve as a positive role model for their mentee, be open to discussing their own college adjustment challenges, and have a strong commitment to help their mentee navigate the entire college experience. Should recognize their role as a role model and make decisions accordingly. Should be outgoing and confident in their success within a college environment. Should be positive and able to admit when they do not know an answer, directing the student to appropriate resources. Should have the ability and maturity to apply skills learned in ongoing mentor training. Should strive for a balanced lifestyle to exemplify for their mentee. Should seek to identify strengths in others and assist them in reaching their potential. Should be eager to be part of a team and work towards the common goals of the TRIO SSS Peer Mentor Program.
Requirements: Must be willing to meet with their mentee on a regular basis throughout the academic year. Must have sufficient time in their Fall schedule to meet with each mentee in both individual and group settings. Must participate in all scheduled training programs each semester. Must maintain effective communication with the TRIO SSS Peer Mentor Coordinator and meet with them individually each semester. Must be in good academic standing. Must attend all scheduled Mentor & Mentee meetings and events. Should actively contribute to program planning, facilitation, and evaluation. Should be aware that they are a role model and representative of TRIO SSS on and off campus, and behave in a manner expected of this position.
