Role of the Construction Project Leader
The Construction Project Leader is accountable for steering projects and overseeing the construction team, managing subcontracts, procurement, monthly billing, approving subcontractor payments, conducting weekly progress meetings, and ensuring quality, productivity, and safety throughout the construction lifecycle. This role is vital to the organization and serves as a leader within the construction project management team. The Construction Project Leader will demonstrate strong capabilities in construction management and will be adept at supervising comprehensive construction efforts, providing both administrative and technical guidance to their team to ensure that each project adheres to design, budget, and timeline specifications.
A Construction Project Leader will proactively manage a variety of operational oversight and activities, effectively communicating and executing tasks, objectives, and resolving issues among subcontractors, foremen, architects, clients, and related personnel. This role is expected to handle responsibilities reliably and consistently while developing the necessary skills to contribute to the success of the project team and Shiel Sexton's business development initiatives. The Construction Project Leader reports to the Senior Project Manager and Project Executive.
Key Responsibilities and Skills
- Foundational understanding of complex building systems, including excavation, utility installation, foundations, structural systems, building envelope, MEP installation, and finishing work.
- Proven ability to manage construction budgets, contract administration, and customer service, responding promptly to needs and managing change orders.
- Understanding customer business needs and acting accordingly; anticipating needs and prioritizing customer satisfaction.
- Competent in collaborating with the site management team to develop schedules, trade sequences, plan phasing, and logistics to ensure performance results and goal achievement.
- Contributing as a productive member of a cohesive team towards common objectives and enhancing team dynamics.
- Setting priorities and defining actions, time, and resources needed to achieve established goals.
- Maintaining effectiveness in reaching goals by adapting to changing circumstances, tasks, responsibilities, and personnel.
- Excellent understanding of project flow for commercial construction and accountability for project outcomes, with leadership skills to facilitate progress meetings and communications with clients, design teams, and subcontractor partners while fostering a strong company culture.
- Proven ability to implement solutions to challenges using business acumen to address issues while maximizing revenue and managing cash flow.
- Leading productive meetings by facilitating engagement with developed agendas and relevant discussion points.
- Identifying opportunities within a network; anticipating threats and taking proactive measures; demonstrating initiative rather than waiting for situations to demand action.
- Willingness to mentor and cultivate a strong team mindset throughout the project lifecycle.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
- Achieving results through effective leadership, objective setting, performance reviews, motivation, delegation, team building, mentoring, and empowerment.
- Continuously gaining insights into strengths and weaknesses to identify areas for further development (skills and knowledge) and acting accordingly.
- Completing all assigned HR and legal compliance training on time.
Qualifications
This position is suited for individuals with five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in commercial construction or equivalent experience, including a minimum of 12 months in an Assistant Project Manager or similar role; demonstrated expertise in managing project finances and a growing knowledge of business development practices.
- Bachelor's degree in construction management preferred; or a related degree in business or engineering
- Associate degree with 10 years of progressive experience as an Assistant Project Manager or Superintendent
- Familiarity with computer-based scheduling tools such as Primavera or ASTA
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, and project management systems such as Viewpoint or Procore is a plus
- Experience managing commercial construction projects
- Extensive experience managing budgets for construction projects
- Strong knowledge of construction materials and equipment
