Job Overview

Work Schedule: This role follows a Monday to Friday schedule, with an 8-hour workday from 7am to 3:00pm. On-call coverage may be required occasionally.

Position Summary

Operator I: Under the guidance of the Water Superintendent, this position assists in the upkeep of the water distribution network and treatment facility.

Operator II: Operates with minimal supervision, conducting water sampling and testing, as well as performing maintenance and repairs on plant and laboratory equipment, along with pump stations.

Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Knowledge and Skills

Operator I:

  • Fundamental understanding of Water Treatment Plant and Distribution Operations
  • Basic knowledge of pump stations and water towers
  • Proficient in basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of safe lifting techniques and chemical handling

Operator II:

  • Advanced understanding of Water Treatment Plant Operations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of maintenance requirements for treatment plants, pump stations, and water towers
  • Proficient in basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of safe lifting techniques and chemical handling
Experience and Licensure

Operator I: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.

Operator II: A valid driver's license with a CDL Class B and no restrictions is required, along with a clean driving record.

Certifications

Operator I: Class I or II plant operator certification is required.

Operator II: Class III or IV plant operator certification is required.

Work Environment

This position involves regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures. The employee may frequently encounter fumes, odors, dirt, wetness, chemicals, and toxins. The noise level may occasionally necessitate hearing protection.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are intended as examples of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

Operator I Responsibilities
  • Perform daily backwashing of filters (typically twice daily)
  • Calibrate pH meters and conduct tests on pH, chlorine, temperature, and CT calculations
  • Replace chemicals and maintain daily logs of usage (polymers, chlorine, alum, and carbon)
  • Respond promptly to alarms and calls
  • Maintain cleanliness of all facilities, pipes, and equipment
  • Participate in on-call rotation
Distribution Responsibilities
  • Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the municipal water system, including mains, service lines, and hydrants
  • Install, replace, repair, inspect, and maintain residential and commercial water meters
  • Document new meter installations and exchanges
  • Update utility mapping
  • Calculate water consumption
  • Manage water service activations and deactivations as needed
Additional Responsibilities
  • Address inquiries and complaints from customers and the public regarding water service
  • Operate heavy equipment
  • Conduct safety inspections of equipment and machinery
  • Respond to emergency calls during and after normal working hours
  • Report any defects or irregularities to the supervisor
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Peripheral Duties
  • Attend monthly safety meetings
  • Foster positive public relations
  • Utilize Personal Protective Equipment as required
  • Adhere to all standards, conduct, and policies outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Assist team members in completing tasks
