Surgical Technologist

As a Surgical Technologist at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in the surgical team by preparing and organizing the operating room, selecting and passing instruments during procedures, and maintaining aseptic conditions. You will work closely with patients, public, and other personnel to ensure a smooth and safe surgical experience.
Key Responsibilities:- Assist physicians during surgery as a member of the surgical team.
- Pass instruments and supplies as directed by the surgeon.
- Conform to prescribed policies and procedures regarding aseptic techniques.
- Assist in draping the patient and providing proper retraction of tissue.
- Hold and position video cameras under the direction of the surgeon.
- Check surgeons' preference cards and prepare sterile setups.
- Count with the circulating nurse and be accountable for items required for documentation.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs and keep adequate sutures and supplies ready.
- Keep the Mayo Stand and Back table neat and orderly.
- Confirm all specimens with the surgeon and hand them off to the circulator.
- Remove suction bottles and dispose of contaminated instruments.
- Adhere to methods of sterilization, disinfecting, antisepsis, and aseptic techniques.
- Packaging, storing, and dispensing surgery supplies.
- Principals for maintaining environmental safety, including handling surgical specimens and body fluids.
- Required counts, electrical and radiation hazards, fire safety, drains, tubes, and collection mechanisms, catheters, and modes of transportation.
- Assist surgeons with surgical procedures in other patient areas according to patient needs.
- Minimum one year of operating room or military equivalent experience in a scrub role within the last two years or recent completion of an operating room training program.
- Surgical Technologist Certificate within six months of hire from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or National Center for Competency Testing Certificate - Technologist in Surgery within six months of hire from the National Center for Competency Testing.
- Basic Life Support certification.
- Prior experience as a First Assistant.
- Variable start time, 7:00 am - 8:00 am, ten-hour shift with backup shift 8-hour shift if desired, 10:00 am - 6:30 pm.
- May travel to San Marcos or Otay Mesa if needed.
