Description:

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, this role is responsible for assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses in the care of patients in the operating room.

Essential Duties:
  • Maintains knowledge and practice of aseptic technique.
  • Assists the circulating nurse in the preparation of surgical procedures and during turnovers between procedures.
  • Prepares sterile fields for surgical procedures, ensuring proper instruments and supplies are available for use.
  • During surgical procedures: anticipates needs for surgeons and passes instruments and supplies, obtains counts with circulating nurses, cares for specimens according to procedure, maintains proper care of instruments/supplies when procedures are finished, and functions as a second-assisting technologist.
  • Maintains equipment, supplies, and environmental safety.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Maintains standards by participating in in-services, committees, and other activities.
  • Functions as a preceptor to new associates and students.
Requirements:
  • Preferred: Previous surgical technologist experience.
Education:
  • Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • BLS from the American Heart Association.
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Completion of an accredited course in surgical technology.
  • Preferred: Associate's degree.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
  • Skilled in utilizing a variety of surgical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, families, physicians, and other Hospital Associates.
  • Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients serviced in her/his assigned service area.
About the Department:

University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing General Surgery is a 20-suite state-of-the-art surgery department providing services for minor/major surgeries, including open heart and major traumas.

Surgical specialties include neuro, cardiac, thoracic, vascular, orthopedics, plastics, ENT, pediatrics, general, gynecology, genitourinary, and daVinci Robot.

Patient populations served include neonates, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics.
