Position Overview
The Trainee Police Officer serves as a non-sworn officer in a developmental role.

Incumbents are required to participate in a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified academy to acquire the essential qualifications necessary for transitioning into a sworn police officer role.

Upon successful completion of the mandated P.O.S.T.

training within the specified timeframe and at the discretion of management, the Trainee Police Officer will be promoted to the position of Police Officer on a probationary basis.

The primary duty of the Trainee is to engage in the designated training sessions to understand the principles, practices, and theories of criminal and civil law enforcement, alongside codified and case law.

The trainee will also receive instruction in report writing, physical fitness methodologies, firearms usage and maintenance, arrest and control methods, de-escalation strategies, community policing techniques, and other law enforcement-related competencies.

Under close supervision, the Trainee may assist other police officers in fulfilling their responsibilities.

This recruitment effort aims to create a candidate pool for both current and future full-time (1.0 time-base) police cadet appointments.

This role is classified as non-exempt under FLSA and qualifies for overtime compensation.

The selection process for Trainee Police Officer positions encompasses application submission, written examination (PELLETB), physical ability assessment, interview, background check, medical evaluation, and psychological assessment.

Education and Experience Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory, along with
Eligibility to enroll in a certified P.O.S.T. basic training academy.
A valid California driver's license is essential.
Compensation and Benefits
The starting salary upon appointment is not anticipated to exceed $6,418 per month.

Salary placement is influenced by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate presents, internal equity, and the fiscal resources of the hiring department.


CSU Classification Salary Range:
$3,934 - $6,418 per month.
Additional Information

The individual in this role is recognized as a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is obligated to adhere to the requirements outlined in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

California State University does not sponsor staff or management positions (e.g., H-1B visa). Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Employment offers are contingent upon the presentation of documents that verify a person's identity and authorization to work in the United States, consistent with the provisions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

A background check (including a criminal records review) must be satisfactorily completed and is a prerequisite for employment.

California State University will extend a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check uncovers disqualifying information, and/or if it is determined that the candidate intentionally withheld or falsified information.

Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may impact the continued employment of a current employee who was conditionally offered the position.
