Job Summary

Embark on a rewarding journey in law enforcement with the City of San Bernardino Police Department as a Law Enforcement Trainee.

Position Overview
The Law Enforcement Trainee (Police Officer Trainee) role is a non-sworn, temporary position that serves as a pathway to a professional law enforcement career within the City of San Bernardino Police Department. This opportunity is tailored for individuals aspiring to become police officers who have yet to complete the Basic Academy training. Upon hiring, trainees will be enrolled in a comprehensive 23-week Basic Police Academy, where they will acquire essential skills and knowledge for law enforcement duties. During the Academy, trainees receive an hourly wage and benefits. Graduates of the Academy will be appointed as Police Officers and will undergo an additional 19 weeks of field training with a designated Field Training Officer, preparing them for independent work in the field.

Selection Process
As part of the recruitment process, candidates must participate in an online written examination to qualify for the Physical Agility Test. Waivers for the online written exam are available for eligible applicants who meet specific criteria, including:
  • Possession of an associate degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Successful completion of the California POST PELLET-B exam with a score of 42 or higher within the last six months.
  • Previous passing of the written exam with the City of San Bernardino Police Department within the last six months.
Note: Proof of degree or passing exam scores must be submitted with the application.

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Must be at least 20 1⁄2 years of age at the time of application.
Licenses and Special Requirements:
  • A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
  • Free of any felony convictions.
  • Good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that may adversely affect the performance of peace officer duties.
Physical Demands:
The physical requirements for this position include the ability to perform essential functions such as using hands for various tasks, standing, walking, climbing, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities are also necessary.

Work Environment:
Employees may work in various environments, including outdoor conditions and office settings, with noise levels varying based on the work location.
