JOB DESCRIPTION

The City of San Luis Obispo is seeking candidates who are either currently enrolled in a police academy or have recently graduated.

JOB SUMMARY:
This position is a non-sworn, entry-level role within the City's law enforcement services. Under direct supervision, the incumbent will attend a Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) approved basic police academy to acquire the essential knowledge, skills, and physical abilities necessary for police work. During the training period, participants do not possess police authority and must adhere to the regulations set forth by the City of San Luis Obispo, the San Luis Obispo Police Department, and the attending police academy. Advancement to a sworn Police Officer role is dependent on successful completion of the basic academy and a final evaluation by the Police Chief. Upon promotion to Police Officer, individuals will enter a one-year probationary period as a regular employee.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Works under the general oversight of a Field Training Officer.

  • Participates in a California POST approved Basic Academy for training.
Ability to:
  • Comprehend, interpret, and apply state and local laws, departmental policies, and other relevant technical literature related to law enforcement.
  • React swiftly and effectively in emergency situations and determine the best course of action.
  • Observe and retain details of incidents.
  • Follow both oral and written directives.
  • Learn to operate a motor vehicle safely in both emergency and non-emergency contexts.
  • Acquire skills to handle firearms safely and proficiently.
  • Extract information through interviews and observations.
  • Compose clear and precise reports.
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with various community members.
  • Interact tactfully and effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Pass psychological evaluations for police suitability.
  • Undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph test and checks on credit history, driving record, criminal history, military service, and employment references.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or G.E.D.;

AND

Must be at least 20 years old at the time of appointment; 20.5 years old upon completion of the academy; and 21 years old at the end of the Field Training Officer program.

AND

Must have uncorrected vision of 20/100, corrected to 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other. For those using soft contact lenses, the uncorrected standard does not apply, but vision must be corrected to 20/30 when both eyes are tested together. Soft lens users must have at least one year of successful use. Normal color vision is essential;

AND

Must be in excellent physical condition, with weight proportionate to height as assessed by an agility test and a medical examination.
