Key Responsibilities:

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Practice Manager, the Tissue Preparation Specialist is accountable for adhering to the laboratory's protocols for specimen management and processing, conducting test analyses, and documenting and maintaining records of patient test outcomes.

The Specialist keeps the Manager and Physicians regularly updated about ongoing work and any issues that may arise.

Specific Duties:

1. Execute all technical procedures related to tissue preparation and slide production while upholding the highest quality standards, including:
- Accurate accessioning of cases into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Dissection of skin and excisional specimens in accordance with established grossing protocols to ensure precise and high-quality processing.
- Embedding of tissue samples.
- Cutting of tissue blocks.
- Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining.

2. Conduct all technical procedures related to the preparation and processing of Special Stain slides:

- Operate the Special Stainer and ensure all equipment is functioning correctly to produce high-quality slides.

- Validate staining kits utilized in the Special Stains area.
- Validate Special Stain controls and monitor the maintenance of adequate control slides and blocks.
- Maintain a quality control system for the Special Stains area.

3. Perform all technical procedures related to the preparation and processing of immunohistochemical slides:

- Operate the IHC Stainer and ensure all equipment is functioning correctly to produce high-quality slides.

- Validate all antibodies used in IHC staining.
- Validate IHC controls used during staining and monitor the maintenance of adequate control slides and blocks.
- Maintain a quality control system specific to the IHC area.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of all IHC antibodies and reagents.

4. Undertake other duties as assigned by management as necessary.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:


HT(ASCP) registered or eligible, or a High School graduate with two (2) years of experience in a histology laboratory performing fixation, specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and reagent preparation.

1-2 years of experience in the field of histotechnology is preferred.
A minimum of two years of grossing experience is strongly preferred.

Required Skills and Abilities:
- Must possess skills equivalent to those taught in an accredited Histotechnology program.
- If employed in a Mohs lab, must qualify as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of computer systems.
- Ability to read and comprehend written protocols, laboratory reference manuals, and memos.
- Manage large volumes of work with accuracy.
- Strong interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally.
