Position Summary
The Veterinary Hospital Supervisor collaborates closely with the Animal Health team to ensure comprehensive veterinary services for the animal population. This role is pivotal in maintaining the operational efficiency of the Animal Health Center (AHC). Responsibilities include overseeing records management, equipment maintenance, inventory control, and procurement processes for the AHC, while also supporting the Animal Health team with logistical coordination and procedural assistance. Together with other zoo personnel, these efforts are essential for safeguarding the health and welfare of the animal collection and advancing the mission of Birmingham Zoo, Inc. (BZI).
Key Responsibilities
Administers the departmental schedule, coordinating veterinary procedures, meetings, and various activities. Conducts inventory assessments of medications and supplies, and places orders for necessary items under the guidance of the Director of Animal Health. Monitors financial expenditures, liaises with suppliers, manages incoming deliveries, and oversees local pickups. Ensures that medical documentation is accurately recorded and consistently updated. In collaboration with the Registrar, communicates with external institutions regarding animal transfers and maintains accurate medical records for incoming animals. Responsible for the upkeep of equipment and ensuring quality standards are met. Assists in the preparation, setup, and cleanup of medical procedures. Maintains the AHC in a clean and organized manner, adhering to standards set by AZA, State Department of Health, and USDA. Performs additional duties as required.Supervision
No direct reports; may oversee volunteers and interns.Safety Considerations
The Veterinary Hospital Supervisor role may involve exposure to various hazards, including:
Potential interactions with unpredictable wildlife. Proper handling and understanding of cleaning agents. Working in a clinical environment with common health industry hazards such as needles, medications, and X-ray equipment. Management of controlled substances.Comprehensive training and procedures will be provided to prioritize the safety of personnel and the animal collection.
Familiarity with personal safety equipment is mandatory.
All staff members are required to understand the Zoo's safety policies as outlined in the staff handbook and must report any injuries to the first aid department immediately.
Physical Requirements

Frequent use of hands, fingers, tools, or controls. Regular standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and communicating. Occasional lifting or moving of items up to 50 pounds. Exposure to outdoor elements.Qualifications

Education and Experience
Preferred experience in a medical or veterinary setting, including data management, inventory control, equipment upkeep, and procurement. While experience as a veterinary assistant or technician is not mandatory, candidates with such backgrounds may be considered for additional responsibilities and compensation.Skills and Knowledge
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively across departments and with suppliers. Strong critical thinking and time management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities; capacity to convey scientific information clearly. Proficiency in MS Office and data entry. Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.Desirable Attributes

Seasonal flu and COVID vaccinations are encouraged. Must be willing to travel locally and possess a valid driver's license with no traffic violations in the past five years.Work Schedule
Full-time position. Typically Monday through Friday during standard business hours, with some flexibility in scheduling. Veterinary assistants and technicians may be required to work evenings and weekends and participate in an on-call rotation, remaining within 30 minutes of the Zoo when on call.Work Environment
