Job Summary

The Birmingham Zoo is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Hospital Manager to join our team. As a key member of our Animal Health department, you will be responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of the Animal Health Center (AHC) and providing exceptional care to our animal collection.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the AHC calendar, including veterinary procedures, meetings, and other activities.
  • Inventory and order medications, supplies, and equipment for the AHC under the direction of the Director of Animal Health.
  • Monitor the budget and communicate with vendors to ensure timely and cost-effective procurement of necessary items.
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date medical records are maintained for all animals in our care.
  • Collaborate with the Registrar to communicate with sending and receiving institutions about animal shipments and records.
  • Perform equipment maintenance and quality control to ensure the AHC meets AZA, State Department of Health, and USDA standards.
  • Assist with procedure preparation, setup, and clean up.
  • Ensure the AHC is maintained, clean, and orderly at all times.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a medical or veterinary office, including data entry, inventory, equipment maintenance, and purchasing.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively across departments and with vendors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey scientific information clearly and concisely.
  • Experience with MS Office and data entry.
  • Strong organizational skills with a focus on attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician.
  • Strong interest in advancing the conservation missions of zoos and aquariums.
  • High self-motivation and a detail-oriented work ethic.
